Abstract
Emerging evidence suggests that components of the metabolic syndrome either in isolation or in aggregate may impact the onset or severity of neurodegenerative processes, including those physiologic changes that lead to Alzheimers Disease (AD). Several animal models that were originally designed to interrogate the metabolic syndrome are readily available. These models can now be used to support studies that may provide new mechanistic links between the metabolic syndrome and neurodegeneration. In addition, animal strains currently being generated and phenotyped through the efforts of an array of NIDDK-supported projects are likely to provide novel and better tools to advance Alzheimers disease research in the near future.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) poses a significant global health challenge, with an increasing number of individuals affected yearly. Deep learning, a subfield of artificial intelligence, has shown immense potential in various domains, including healthcare. This thematic issue of Current Alzheimer Research explores the application of deep learning techniques in advancing our ...read more
Diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers of dementia
Dementia affects 18 million people worldwide. Dementia is a syndrome of symptoms caused by brain disease, usually chronic or progressive, clinically characterized by multiple impairments of higher cortical functions such as memory, thinking, orientation, and learning. In addition, in the course of dementia, cognitive deficits are observed, which often hinder ...read more
