I was delighted when I received a request from “Micro and Nanosystems” to write a foreword for this special issue “Recent Advances
on Engineering Materials: micro to nano scale” as a Guest Editor. This Special Issue has been organized into eight articles,
covering a wide range of topics in engineering materials from micro to nano scale. The development of newly synthesized engineering
materials is truly exciting owing to their plethora of applications in diverse and promising areas. Most importantly, the biomedical
applications of these materials are undoubtably beneficial to humankind. Furthermore, these materials possess many interesting properties
like piezoelectric, pyroelectric, electro-optical, photorefractive properties. Hence may be used for integrated optics and photonic
applications. Moreover, due to their good dielectric properties, these materials are very useful in satellite communications systems.
These materials also find extensive applications in sensing, solar cells and artificial photosynthetic devices. Keeping in mind, Barik et
al.  have reported the synthesis of a polycrystalline LiNbO3 ceramic by a solid-state reaction method at high temperature. The material
has high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss at room temperature. The reported compound exhibited a dielectric anomaly at
high temperature suggesting ferroelectric–paraelectric phase transition. The effect of mechanical alloying on microstructural and
thermal properties of nanocrystalline Mg2TiO4 powders has been investigated by Bhuyan et al. .
Quantum dots are one of the most promising and interesting developments in the rapidly growing world of nanotechnology. Basing
on that, Kudrat-E-Zahan et al.  have reported the synthesis of TGA-capped CdTe QDs and TGA-CdTe-Hyamine 1622 Composites.
The reported TGA-CdTe-hyamine 1622 composites have shown effective fluorescence properties with good thermal stability.
Slurry transportation through pipelines is easy and environment friendly method, which may reduce the problems of congested
transportation network. So the researchers are continuously working on formulation and stabilization of various types of slurries for
economic pipeline transportation. Das et al.  have prepared high concentration coal–water-alcohol slurry using glycerol, glycol and
ethanol as an additive. According to them, coal-water-glycerol slurry was better than other coal water-alcohol slurry. Research on
harvesting solar energy through an artificial photosynthetic device is gaining momentum in the present era. Mishra et al.  have designed
a unique and novel photoelectron transport protein device, which could harvest solar energy-a clean eternal fuel.
Thermal power plants use coal as a source of energy. The combustion products released into the environment should be reused.
Keeping in mind, Sahoo et al.  have studied the properties of sintered fly-ash samples collected from Rourkela Steel Plant, Odisha
and compared with refractory bricks. The properties of the sintered fly-ash sample could have been improved with addition of
binders. Mannan et al.  have reported a simple hydrothermal methodology for the synthesis of Nitrogen, Sulfur co-doped reduced
graphene oxide, where thiourea was used as a single-source precursor of N and S atoms. The authors have recommended its
applications as biosensor, capacitor, and energy storage devices. Polymer matrix-based composites are the workhorse of the composite
industries. Keeping in mind, Rahman et al.  have synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles by conventional sol-gel method. Moreover,
TiO2/epoxy and SiO2/epoxy nanocomposites were also prepared via a solution casting method incorporating the TiO2 and
SiO2 nanofillers in the epoxy matrix. The study concluded that the use of nano SiO2 in epoxy matrix might increase the possibility
of replacing TiO2/epoxy nanocomposites for various less expensive structural applications.
Considering the manifold and wide ranging applications of such materials in diverse and promising areas, this special issue
will provide ample references for the modern researchers. The guest editor would like to express his sincere gratitude to all the
