One of the most challenging aspects of caring for women is the evaluation and treatment of an adnexal mass. The gravest concern among patients is the trepidation of a cancer diagnosis. Unfortunately, due to inadequate screening strategies for ovarian cancer, the most lethal histologic subtype of ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at advanced stages when prognosis is poor. Often times an “adnexal mass” is an incidental finding on an imaging study ordered for another indication. This presents a diagnostic challenge for the clinician to determine the etiology of the adnexal mass as all adnexal masses are not necessarily gynecologic in origin. Furthermore, one must decide whether surgical management is required for evaluation and the extent of surgery needed. In this proposed thematic issue, we will provide the most up-to-date literature with respect to the evaluation, management, and treatment of the adnexal mass.
