Abstract

Background and Objective: Nanocrystalline spinel copper ferrite (CuFe2O4) nanomaterial was synthesized by combustion method using both chemical and green route. Glycine was used for chemical synthesis and Aloe vera extract was used in green synthesis as fuel.

Method: In green synthesis profile, Aloe vera juice extract was used successfully as a reducing agent and it helped in autoignition of the reaction process. The synthesized nanoparticles were black in color and crystalline in nature. The synthesized copper ferrite was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform electron microscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) techniques which confirms the formation of CuFe2O4 in nanocrystalline scale. Antibacterial studies of both chemical and green synthesized nano copper ferrite were carried out on seven bacterial strains and their Minimum Inhibitory Values (MIC) were determined.

Results: The green synthesized nanomaterial showed significant antibacterial activity for all five clinical isolates. Antibacterial activities of these metal oxide nanomaterials were determined and they were found active against both Gram positive B.subtilis and S.aureus and Gram negative E.coli, salmonella paratyphi and P.vulgaris. Further, the antibacterial activity of nano-copper ferrite was evaluated against five pathogenic bacteria, indicating that the antibacterial activity against Gram positive and Gram negative pathogenic bacterial strains and retains potential application in pharmaceutical and biomedical industries.

Conclusion: The cytotoxicity studies for the green synthesized nanocrystalline spinel CuFe2O4 on Human Breast Adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines showed remarkable anticancerous activity.

Keywords: Nano copper ferrites, antimicrobial activity, E. coli, Salmonella paratyphi, P. vulgaris, reactive oxygen species (ROS).
