Abstract

Background: A recent advancement in textile and nano-biotechnology has shown that modern nanotechnology based clothing can self protect from disease transmission due to their antimicrobial properties. Present article focuses on antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles as well as surface coated textile fibres with different polymers. Nano-silver colloids were prepared by chemical methods and their adsorption on cotton fabrics was strategized in the simplest possible manner. The silver nano-particles/colloids were characterized by UV-Visible spectroscopy, particle size analysis, FTIR, and Raman technique as well as by XRD measurement.

Conclusion: As-processed cotton was tested for antimicrobial activity. Polycarbonate coated cotton containing nano-silver particles showed the satisfactory antimicrobial property, while poly ethylene glycol coated cotton showed no control over bacterial growth.
