The requirement of new materials for variety of applications has forced researchers to design new materials
and understand the science behind their various properties. New classes of materials have been developed
with changes in their property from their parent material as per the requirement and application in
Present thematic issue entitled “Polymer Electrolytes in sustainable energy developments” in “Recent
Innovations in Chemical Engineering Journal” is a collection of cutting edge papers presented in
3rd International Conference on Science and Engineering of Materials (ICSEM-2019) held at Sharda University,
Greater Noida, India, during 19-21 July, 2019.
Research progress in any of its specialized field’s demands sharing of its results and open forum for
further critical discussions. Conferences provide platforms for such exchange of experiences and share of
expertise. ICSEM series conference, aims to provide an option for interaction with established researchers
and young minds on a Exotic Materials exploring present state of art for various possible applications.
Therefore, a forum wherein experts of all possible disciplines can come to a single platform is required.
The easiest possible mechanism to create such a platform is a conference. With this concept the first
ICSEM conference was organized in 2014.
This conference was inaugurated by the patrons of the conference - Shri P.K. Gupta. The conference
was spread over 32 lecture sessions and one poster session. This included one plenary lecture, 53 invited
talks and 192 papers were presented by oral/poster mode by eminent scientists, faculty members, research
scholars, graduate/post graduate students from various colleges and universities of India and abroad in the
field of material research. The speakers included senior scientists/researchers from South Korea, Malaysia,
Norway, Nigeria, Japan. Nationally premier institutions like Banaras Hindu University, University of
Delhi, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Sharda University, National Physical Laboratory scientists/researchers are also
grace this ocassion.
The deliberations of conference were majorly focused on cutting edge areas like application of Carbon
based materials, Ceramics, Nanocomposites, Solar cells, Polymer electrolytes, Electrolyte for energy devices,
Batteries and many more.
On behalf of the organizing team, we express our sincere thanks to all delegates for their contribution,
reviewers of the papers, administration of Sharda University for making the conference a meaningful one.
From our bottom of heart we must thanks our colleagues, staff of School of Basic Sciences & Research,
the research scholars and students of Materials Research Laboratory, Sharda University in fulfilling the
theme and making the conference a great success.

Energy is necessary to accomplish many of the daily tasks, either as electricity, heat, or other forms of
energy. Moreover, energy demand is constantly increasing, and that trend will continue since the human
population grows each year. In the past decades, the energy demand was satisfied using petroleum derivatives,
but there is uncertainty about how long the petroleum production will be enough to be used as energy
source. According to the prediction of Hubbert (1969) , the peak on petroleum production has
been already reached. Other predictions mention that the peak will be reached by 2021 (Yang, 2015) .
Moreover, the use of petroleum-derived energetics has an important environmental impact, due to the
greenhouse gases released on their production and when used in furnaces, engines, and other devices (Environmental
Protection Agency, 2018) . This opens a new research area and several innovation opportunities,
where the goal is to find alternative, renewable energy sources, which can help to reduce the dependence
on the petroleum economy, also reducing the environmental impact due to the production of energy.
Chemical Engineering has an important role on that search. The creation of new, clean alternatives
for the production of energy; the development of process for the production of clean fuels with low energy
requirements; or the determination of the best supply chain strategies for the production of renewable energy,
are only some of the areas where Chemical Engineering can contribute, looking ahead for a more
sustainable energy network. In this special issue, innovative research on the production of renewable energy
is presented, where Chemical Engineering plays an important role, in collaboration with other related
disciplines. The research presented here is just a sample of the many areas of development on which
chemical engineers are working for the development of bio-based economy. There are still many opportunities
in this area, thus the efforts must continue.
