Guidelines for Guest Editors

The Role of Guest Editors

Guest Editors (GE) play a crucial role in shaping and curating Special Issues for a journal. Each proposal undergoes a rigorous evaluation process, during which it is carefully reviewed and approved by the Editor-in-Chief to ensure its relevance, quality, and alignment with the journal's standards and scope.

The Guest Editors are responsible for handling and managing the submission process for thematic issues. They are expected to submit a brief proposal on a hot and emerging field, for editorial consideration. Additionally, guest editors are expected to coordinate and oversee the submissions and overall management of the issue.

A thematic issue may be edited solely by the Guest Editor or co-edited in collaboration with another expert in the field, who may be included as the Co-Guest Editor.

Guidelines for Thematic/Special Issue

A Thematic or Special issue is a collection of 8 to 10 comprehensive review articles on a topic of significant importance to the field. Contributors should preferably be established researchers with a respectable h-index and should ideally represent various regions to ensure diversity in contributions. Since the editorial decisions on all thematic issue manuscripts are made by the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of the journal, it is recommended that the Guest Editor (GE) provide a list of 12 to 14 potential contributors in their proposal, along with tentative titles of their papers. This allows for flexibility in case some manuscripts are deemed unsuitable by the EiC or do not pass the peer review process.

Preparing a Proposal

Before proposing a Special Issue and selecting an appropriate journal, it is essential to review the journal's specific guidelines. These guidelines are typically available on the journal's homepage under the “Author Guidelines" section. A thorough understanding of these instructions ensures that the Guest Editor’s proposal aligns with the journal’s scope and submission requirements.

A Special Issue Proposal should contain the following details:

  • Tentative title of the Special Issue.
  • A one-page proposal outlining the significance of the chosen topic and the proposed submission deadline for articles.
  • A list of subtopics to be covered in the Thematic Issue (typically 8 to 10 articles).
  • A list of potential contributors (who should all be recognized experts in the field) along with their affiliations.
  • Tentative schedule for the Special Issue.

Once the guest editor has compiled all the necessary details, they should submit the completed Special Issue proposal form via the designated proposal submission system. This platform facilitates a streamlined submission process and ensures that the proposal reaches the appropriate editorial team for review.

Inviting Authors

The Guest Editor is responsible for nominating authors for the thematic issue. Once the editor of the journal approves their credentials, the Guest Editor invites them to submit high-quality papers for the thematic issue. These submissions must adhere to rigorous standards in terms of scientific content and presentation.

Submissions for special or thematic issues undergo the same rigorous evaluation process as regular journal submissions. Each manuscript is independently reviewed by at least two (preferably three) eminent experts in relevant fields.

Guest Editors have the authority to recommend revisions and request resubmissions as needed. All decisions must be communicated to the editorial office. A manuscript will only be accepted for publication if it meets the criteria of originality and demonstrates significant research value. Generally, final editorial decisions for all submissions to Special or Thematic Issues are typically made by the Editor-in-Chief of the journal.

The contributors should be prominent researchers capable of providing an up-to-date overview of the latest advancements in their field.

  • A Guest Editor or Co-Guest Editor is allowed to be an author or a co-author of only one manuscript. Additionally, the Guest Editor is expected to write the Introduction/Editorial for the issue.
  • It is strongly recommended that contributing authors be eminent researchers from diverse geographic regions to ensure a broad, international perspective.

An invitation to submit a paper for a special or thematic issue does not guarantee acceptance for publication. Some submissions may be rejected if they do not meet the required quality standards.

Manuscripts submitted to Bentham Science journals must be original, unpublished, and not under simultaneous submission elsewhere. Authors must adhere to the ethical guidelines outlined at https://benthamscience.com/pages/publishing-ethics.

Guest Editors should inform authors about the proposed timeline for the Special/Thematic Issue. Failure to submit articles within the specified timeframe may result in rejection of the submission by the Publisher.

Peer Review of Special/Thematic Issue Papers

The peer review process for all manuscripts submitted to Bentham Science is conducted independently and remains completely separate from the Guest Editors' influence.

  • A minimum of two (preferably three) double-blind peer reviews are required. Reviewers must hold a Ph.D. degree. Peer reviews are conducted by independent, eminent reviewers. Guest Editors and authors may not nominate reviewers for their own manuscripts. However, nominated reviewers may be considered for other relevant articles based on their expertise
  • Final editorial decisions on all Special/Thematic Issue submissions will be made by the Editors-in-Chief.
Submissions Procedure

Authors are encouraged to use the online submission and tracking service for efficiency. The complete thematic issue must be submitted through the Manuscript Processing System (MPS) at https://bentham.manuscriptpoint.com/View Submission Instructions.

Publication

After the Editor accepts the papers, they are forwarded to the publisher's production department for the next stage of the publication process. Before final publication on the website, authors will have the opportunity to review and approve the proofs online to ensure accuracy.
