Prof. Fernandez-Lafuente is presently the lead researcher responsible for the group "Optimization of bioprocesses and biocatalysis" at ICP-CSIC, Madrid, Spain. His expertise mainly lies in the study of the interactions between biomacromolecules and activated solids, either to purify or to immobilize/stabilize these biomacromolecules. Moreover, he has expertise in the chemical and physical modification of these biomacromolecules, either to improve their properties or to improve their immobilization. He has authored/co-authored over 390 papers as well as 20 patents, and he has supervised more than 18 doctoral theses. His current h-index is 68 (Scopus accessed on 11-May-2018).

Youcai Xiong is an agricultural ecologist in Lanzhou University, northwest China. Over the last two decades, he has been engaged in fundamental research and technology innovation in agricultural and food system in semiarid and arid areas. Some of his research work led to new insights and technological innovation in farming system and food security, particularly in plant toxin identification and its physiological influence to human health (grass pea etc.). In recent seven years, he also aimed to enhance the research and extension of dryland water-saving farming system regarding small household farmers in developing countries such as Kenya, Pakistan and Ethiopia.

During his Ph.D., he spent 9 months in Dijon (France), the Institute Jules Guyot, Université de Bourgogne and at the National School of Biology Applied to Nutrition and Food. Dr. El-Tarabily is an associate professor at the Biology Department, College of Science; UAE University.  He obtained his PhD from Murdoch University, Australia in 1997.  He specializes in Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology.  He taught different undergraduate and graduate courses.  His research activities have been diversified over a number of topics including the use of beneficial microorganisms as biological fertilizers and as biological control agents to reduce the dependence on agrochemicals in the field of agriculture.  He has authored or coauthored over 50 scientific papers. He represented the UAE University in a total of 99 international and local conferences. He has also supervised 20 Master students, and 6 PhD. students.  As a result of his research accomplishments he was awarded 15 research grants totaling to AED 4.,700,100.  He also obtained 3 international patents from USA, UK and Hong Kong and he is also editor in many international journals and he obtained many awards such as Al Owais Creative Award, Rashid Bin Humaid Award for Culture and Science, and Think Science competition. He is a verified reviewer in a variety of international journals and he also served the UAE community by providing scientific consultancy to many sectors within the UAE.

Dr. Piemontese research focus is mainly concerned towards the synthesis, and the chemical and optical characterization of small molecules in the fields of neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. Some of his research work led to new insights and innovation in quality control of foodstuffs and especially foods with animal origin, particularly about presence, molecular characterization and antibiotic resistance properties of some kinds of foodborne pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and …. He has some experience about the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii in foods with animal origins. He also has some experience about the presence of toxic heavy metals in foodstuffs and especially milk.

Dr Hancock is a senior research scientist and group leader at the James Hutton Institute with 20 years experience. He has identified several novel thermophilic bacterial consortia screened from extreme environments that can degrade low and high density polyethylene and polypropylene. He is the member of 15 National & International scientific and professional societies. He has authored 44 International papers, 65 conferences proceedings, one text book and 6 book chapters. He has received several awards and travel grants for his research.
