Abstract

Wound healing is a complex multifunctional physiological process that
mediates the contraction and closing of the wound area, which repairs the function of
the skin barrier. Repairing of damaged tissue takes place as a sequence of processes in
different cell types, including inflammation, proliferation and migration. The wound
healing process can be mediated by natural products that possess anti-inflammatory,
antimicrobial, pro-collagen synthesis, immunomodulatory, and cell-stimulating
properties, which contribute to the accelerated healing process. Plants are an abundant
source of biologically active compounds or a mixture of compounds with synergistic or
additive effects as wound healing agents; therefore, their applications are limited when
used as a single compound. However, nanotechnology is a promising powerful tool in
the delivery of such drugs owing to their stability, high loading capacity and targeted
delivery. This chapter aims to review the phytochemical-assisted gold nanoparticles for
burn wound management. It is focused on synthesis, medicinal plants-based
applications, and mechanism of action in wound healing. Also, it highlights the
literature reports available on various in vitro and in vivo studies concerning the use of
plant-based gold nanoparticles for wound healing. Pharmaceutical nanotechnology is
an innovation used for regenerative medicine with potential use in the near future since
it has proved efficient in managing burn wounds.
