Sexually transmitted co-infections increase HIV infectiousness through local
inflammatory processes. The risk factors in acquiring genital co-infections associated
with HIV infection still present many questions. There is some evidence that there is an
association between certain sexually transmitted infections and HIV, but for others,
there is only a marginal correlation, as will be discussed in this chapter. The most
prevalent co-infections found in HIV carriers and their epidemiology, clinical features
and evidence-based treatments will also be analyzed.
