Abstract

Porphyrins are approved as agents to localize malignant tissues by several investigators. There is a great potential interest in the use of porphyrin derivatives capable of high selective accumulation in malignant tissues for the imaging of malignancies. Whilst the porphyrin-based compounds penetrate tumor cells selectively and remain constantly, numerous analogues of porphyrins with different peripheral functional groups have been labeled with various metals and radiometals for imaging purposes, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear imaging techniques (SPECT/PET). This review summarizes recent advances in the preparation of labeled porphyrins for imaging purposes.

Keywords: Functional, imaging, malignancies, MRI, PET, porphyrin, SPECT.
