Majority of organic compounds are generally synthesized by using either carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom bondforming
reactions . Almost every day, a huge number of methods are being reported related to the carbon-carbon and/or carbon-
heteroatom bond-forming reactions by following conventional pathways. Though these developed protocols possess certain
advantages still many of them are not fulfilling the sustainability issues. As a result, realizing the necessity to protect our
‘Mother Nature’ from the ever-increasing chemical pollutants, there is an urge to develop new protocols or modify those conventional
reaction processes to make them sustainable [2-6]. Among many other modifications towards sustainability, the involvement
of microwaves in organic synthesis helped a lot to achieve this goal . Almost every occasion it was observed that
the microwave-assisted synthetic protocols are much more advantageous than the conventional pathways in terms of reaction
times, yields and selectivity [8-12]. There is evident enough that under microwave-irradiated conditions certain reactions can be
carried out in absence of any catalyst . There are so many occasions where desired products were achieved only under microwave-
irradiated conditions . Moreover, there are certain instances where desired compounds were synthesized through
the formation of multiple carbon-carbon as well as carbon-heteroatom bonds under microwave-irradiated conditions .
Under this background, this thematic issue ‘Microwave-assisted carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond forming reactions’
intends to highlight recent progress on the development of various carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond forming
reactions under microwave irradiated conditions. In continuation with the part 1A [13,16,17], this part of the thematic issue also
builds up with four valuable review articles on the following selected topics:
The first contribution of this part of the thematic issue titled ‘Microwave-assisted carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom
cross-coupling reactions in organic synthesis’ by Pal and Mukhopadhyay describes various cross-coupling reactions under microwave-
assisted conditions leading to the synthesis of a variety of biologically promising compounds .
The second contribution, titled ‘Microwave-accelerated approaches to diverse xanthenes: A review’ by Prof. Nath and his
group, deals with recent developments on microwave-assisted protocols for the efficient synthesis of various xanthene derivatives
. On many occasions synthesis of xanthenes was accomplished under solvent-free conditions with excellent yields.
The third contribution, titled ‘Recent advances in microwave promoted C-P cross-coupling reactions’ by Prof. Basu and his
group summarizes various microwave-accelerated carbon-phosphorus cross-coupling reactions reported mostly during last two
In the last contribution, titled ‘Microwave-mediated synthesis of medium ring-sized heterocyclic compounds’, Ghosh and
Chattopadhyay describes microwave-assisted various synthetic protocols for the preparation of structurally diverse five and sixmembered
heterocyclic compounds reported so far .
I am very much thankful to all the renowned contributors for accepting my invitation and their valuable contribution to organizing
this part of the special thematic issue for Current Microwave Chemistry (CMIC). I am grateful to the senior journal
manager and the entire editorial team of Current Microwave Chemistry, especially Mr. Umer Farooq, for his wholehearted support.
I am also thankful to Prof. (Dr.) Jerry J. Wu (Editor-in-Chief) for his kind support throughout. Thanks are due to the respective

Carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reactions are the backbone of synthetic organic chemistry . On the
other hand, to save our ‘Mother Nature’ from the ever increasing chemical pollution, we need to modify our conventional reaction
processes to make them sustainable. Realizing the necessity, organic methodologists are continuously trying to design new
protocols or modify conventional techniques for such bond forming reactions leading to the syntheses of structurally diverse
molecular entities under greener conditions. As a result, last decade has shown a tremendous outburst to carry out carboncarbon
and carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reactions by following various sustainable pathways [2-6]. It is noteworthy to
mention that the involvement of microwave in organic synthesis helps a lot to achieve this goal . In many occasions it was
found that the microwave-irradiated pathway is much more advantageous than the conventional processes in terms of reaction
rates as well as yields of the desired products [8-12]. This thematic issue ‘Microwave-assisted carbon-carbon and carbonheteroatom
bond forming reactions - Part 1A’ intends to highlight the current progress on the development of carbon-carbon
and carbon-heteroatom bond forming reactions under microwave irradiated pathway. The present issue builds up with three
valuable review articles contributed by the eminent research groups and offers an up-to-date literature on the following three
The first contribution of this part of the thematic issue titled ‘Recent progress on carbon-chalcogen bond formation reaction
under microwave irradiation’ by Ranu et al., provides an upto date literature related to the microwave-assisted carbonchalcogen
bond formation leading to the synthesis of a variety of biologically promising chalcogenides .
The second contribution, titled ‘Microwave-accelerated carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formation via multi
component reactions: A brief overview’ by Kamanna and Khatavi, summarizes various microwave-irradiated one-pot multicomponent
synthesis of bioactive scaffolds by following carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formation strategies .
In the last contribution titled ‘Microwave assisted catalyst-free synthesis of bioactive heterocycles’, our group describes catalyst-
free synthesis of various bioactive heterocycles under the influence of microwave irradiation .
