Abstract
Nanoparticles of several organic and inorganic materials are nowadays under investigation for many diverse technologies. Amorphous silicon dioxide, also known as silica, is a versatile material for nanostructure preparation. Silica nanoparticles with different structure or surface chemistry have been prepared for biomedical applications. Size, shape and functionalization rule nanoparticle interaction with cells and tissues finally regulating the potential toxic effects. “Ad hoc” surface chemical moieties and specific physical features of their structure increase silica nanoparticle biocompatibility suggesting their possible future employment for gene or drug delivery.
