Abstract: A facile, efficient and high-yielding two-step synthesis of 3-oxo-5-arylthiopentanoates - the precursors for Nazarov reagent - from low-cost bench top chemicals like thiophenols, acrylonitrile, zinc and ethyl bromoacetate via the Blaise reaction, is reported.
