Highly Efficient Microwave Aided Synthesis of Some New Benzofuran Endowed Pyrazolyl-Pyrazoline Hybrids of Coumarins and their Antimicrobial Screening

Background: An efficient microwave aided synthesis of some new benzofuran appended pyrazolyl-pyrazoline hybrids of coumarins 4a-h and 5a-l has been developed.

Materials and Mertods: aThe title compounds were synthesized by employing hitherto unreported 3-{3-[3-(benzofuran-2-yl)-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]acryloyl}coumarins 2a-d under microwave irradiation. The structures of all the newly synthesized compounds were established based on IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, mass spectral data and elemental analysis. The compounds 2a-d, 4ah and 5a-l were then screened for their antimicrobial potency against representative strains of bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi) and fungi (Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans).

Results and Conclusion: Compounds 4f, 4g and 5a manifested significant antibacterial activity.
