In the current report, antioxidant potential of Verbascum sinaiticum has been studied.
Radical scavenging and reducing ability of various solvent extracts and isolated constituents from
the aerial parts were evaluated by DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays. Most active water-soluble part
of the ethylacetate fraction afforded six phenylethanoid glycosides (1-6), namely Verbascoside,
Eukovoside, Martynoside, Jionoside D, Campenoside I and Campenoside II. Largely, all these constituents
exhibited significant antioxidant activity whereas their synergistic effect was found prominent
in the parent fraction. This is the first report on the antioxidant activity and the isolation of all
these phenylethanoid glycosides from Verbascum sinaiticum.
