Assessment of Ovarian Volume, Ovarian Follicle Count and Ovarian Blood Flow in Hyper Androgenic Anovulation

Abstract

The emergence of new ultrasound machines and hence the possibility of a more detailed view from the female reproductive system, has incorporated some changes in the gynecologist routine and in some previously defined concepts for diagnostics. The hyperandrogenic anovulation, also called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is frequently associated with a large follicle number per ovary (FNPO); which is being used as a diagnostic criterion for more than one decade. In this chapter we will review the need for updating the cut-off value when using FNPO to diagnose hyper androgenic anovulation and the current knowledge about the use of three-dimensional ultrasound (3DUS) machines when assessing ovarian volume, ovarian follicle count and ovarian blood flow.
