Cholinesterase Inhibition of Selected 4-Methylcoumarins in Comparison to their Antioxidant Activity
Sanja C. Zeljkovic,
Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a progressive neurodegenerative disease has become one of the major
health issues in developed countries. Continuing our research on biological activity of coumarin derivatives, this
study presents evaluation of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitory activity of series 4-
methylcoumarins. All studied compounds showed inhibitory activity in a similar manner as they are capable of scavenging
reactive oxygen species and reducing transition metals. This study was focused on structural features that regulate biological
activity of 4-methylcoumarins.
Keywords: 4-Methylcoumarins, acetylcholinesterase, antioxidant activity, butyrylcholinesterase.
